Carbon Footprint measurement

Carbon footprint is the measure of the total amount of harmful greenhouse gas that the people produce it directly or indirectly. First at all I measured my carbon footprint by using http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/. In this link they ask me some questions to rate my carbon footprint. First questions were about food. For example they ask me about how often I eat meat of fish, and my answer was few times a week. After that they ask some questions about travel. To illustrate, they ask me about what kind of vehicle I used to travel and what the size of it. Next questions were about home. Finally, they ask about stuff.

After answering the questions they gave me number of earths that I used, I got 2.26 earths. Then, I got some equivalent results from other student in my class. My friend Mohamed Yousf got 6.84 earths, Reada got 7.24 earths Ahmed Al Salami got 6.58 earths and Ahmed Al Tenaiji got 7.99 earths. From these results I saw that most the results were high and we should reduce carbon footprint.

In order to reduce carbon footprint following recommendation or need to take in to account: using public transport, recycling waste, using renewable energy and reducing our consumption of oil.

Cool Cities

There are some problem effects our world since the start of the industrial revolution. There are traffic issue, increase amount of CO2, increase of energy consumption, earth environment issue and the rise in the population. If we don’t solve these problems we need another Earth to live. We have to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide by one half which emitted into air to live within the capacity of a single earth.

In Japan during the last 30 years Gross Domestic Product has gone up 100% while energy efficiency has increased 37% and oil consumption has decreased 8%. Most of carbon dioxide emitted into air comes from building and transportation.

Cool City is a model city, propose in the UAE. SDCJ member will build it and they are from Japan. There are three types of transportations that will be used in Cool City: monorail station, light rail transportation and water transportation system. There are six various zones in the city: business and public zone, culture and sport zone, resort zone and residential zone. There are some techniques that will reduce heat: water and trees. They expected that 80% of CO2 will reductions from the two types of buildings.

In conclusion, the overall 60% of reduction CO2 emissions claimed in the video.

LEBONIN HISTORY

Lebanon is located in the Middle East and it is about the size of Yorkshire. The bible called it the land of milk and honey. The capital of Lebanon is Beirut and they called it the Paris of the East. Most the population is young and 60% of the Lebanese are under 25 years old. There are five countries which surround Lebanon; they are Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Cyprus.

In 1943 after the independence from France, Christians held the power and Muslims had little say in the running of their country. In 1948 after the Arab-Israel war, over 100,000 Palestinians poured into Lebanon, and this felled resentment amongst Lebanon’s Christians. After that in 1975 when members of a radical Christian group the Phalange, attacked and killed a bus full of Palestinians In downtown Beirut. So Syria sent in 20,000 troops to root out and quash radical Muslim groups on the invitation of the Maronite Christian led government and also there were 2000 Palestinians were killed. The Israeli army invaded the city in 1982, and they killed many thousands in the fighting. After 7 years Lebanese leaders offering an equal balance between Christians and Muslims in a new Lebanese parliament. This conflict costs many human lives and was destructive to the economic, high number of people were died and 300,000 were wounded and nearly a quarter of population left the country, Beirut economic was paralyzed for years.

After all this hard conflict, there are signs of social and economic recovery in Beirut. The government wants to turn Beirut into global financial center and most money is pouring in from businessmen the Gulf States. Also the government is inviting to foreigners to invest in rebuilding. Nowadays many tourists from the gulf and other countries love to spend time in Beirut. There are some current problems in the country. It is difficult to build your own future when 300,000 of young people have left. Also the unemployment remains very high.

An Introduction to Global Warming

Global warming is the increase in the temperature of the Earth's surface air and oceans. The global average temperature near the Earth's surface has increased from 0.74 ± 0.18 °C in the hundred years ending in 2005. Gases in the Earth's worked to trap solar heat in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide. This is good things to keeps our planet suitable for life. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests too much, are raising the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and temperatures.

The warming is a big problem in our Earth's, because it causes many bad changes and many people are worried about it. One of the big changes is that the number of hurricanes has been increased in the last few years. Also melting of the ice in Greenland has doubled over the past decade. Many plants and animals may be harmed because of Global warming.

Global Warming - An Inconvenient Truth

The movie begins with a serious mood from Al Gore. He is the former United States Vice President. He makes this interesting film called “An Inconvenient Truth”. He wants to explain to the people about the Global warming and the effect of this issue. He shows the hurricanes disasters and what is happening to glaciers around the world and other effects of the Global warming. He used many pictures and graphs to explain the information’s.

He shows what is happening to glaciers around the world, it’s seen that many glaciers have melted. This is a big problem for many people around the world, because 40% of the people in the Earth get their drinking water from melting water from glaciers. Also from melted ice it could raise global sea levels by approximately 20 feet and this could flood coastal areas. We can see that the two graphs of temperature in Northern Hemisphere and CO2 concentrations in the past 1000 years that they close fit together, if the Hemisphere rise the CO2 also rise. The rises in temperature in oceans cause hurricanes because of the different of current, cold and hot. Many buildings have fallen down on permafrost because of melting and also many roads crack and collapse. This has caused many accidents. Gore mentioned that mosquito tone to move to higher elevation and this has caused many diseases as malaria. As well many sea animals moved to the north because of these changes in the sea temperatures. He describes what will happen if the Greenland melts. It will raise the sea level and the Europe will be very cold. Also in Antarctica’s ice sheet many collapse as result of global warming. There are 3 factors he said contribute to the collision between our civilization and the earth, the population, technology and the way we use the Earth. Growing population is mean that a lot of oil burning and many consumption of natural resources.

We can help our economy grow and help the environment at the same time by use the produce can be fit with environment. He mention the great thing that Americans have done that they though that was difficult, they joined together to reduce the CO2 by wind power, sun power and planting more vegetation to consume existing CO2.

Opinion

The movie was interesting in that it describes the most serious problem effecting in our world nowadays which is the Global warming. The movie shows the graphs of how the world was before and now and what is the reason are for these changes. As well it gives some solutions to help the economy grow without harming the environment. From watching this film I found most compelling that the talking in the film was more than the videos. I didn’t agree with AL Gore in the point that he mentioned that just two countries had done anything to solve this problem. I see more that two countries have to try to move to solve this issue.

The effect of the movie was very good and also Al Gore’s comments were good because he mentioned about the past and how the Earth is compared with what could happen in the future. The music in the movie was effective because it help to transport the idea and the feeling to the person watching this movie. Also the images was nice because it’s helped to illustrate the idea and the information. Finally, I rate this movie to be 7 of 10.
